Legislation - FAQs about the Act

When did this Act take effect?

The Act took effect on January 1, 2008 (Technical corrections bill must be passed to confirm an effective date of June 17, 2008).

Are there types of reflectors that are exempt from the legislation?

• ≤ 45 watt R20 • ≤ 50 watt BR30
• ≤ 50 watt ER30 • ≤ 50 watt BR40
• ≤ 50 watt ER40 •  65 watt BR30
•  65 watt ER40 •  65 watt BR40
•  Lamps that are colored or designed for rough or vibration service applications

Do Philips Halogen and Compact Fluorescent reflector lamps meet the legislations’ efficiency requirements?

Yes. See the product upgrade chart to find which lamps should be used as replacements for lamps not meeting the requirements.

How can I be compliant with the efficiency standards?

The Act applies to products manufactured on/or after the effective date. We recommend you begin converting to either a comparable incandescent, halogen, or compact fluorescent reflector which meets the new guidelines, as you deplete your existing inventory. See the Product Upgrade Chart to find which lamps should be used as replacements for lamps not meeting the requirements.

Which lamp should I use for those lamps that do not have a direct replacement?

The recommendation is to use the next lowest wattage lamp which meets the efficiency standards.
