PHILIPS LIGHTING COMPANY ANNOUNCES RETAIL WINNERS OF 2004 INNOVATION AWARD COMPETITION

SOMERSET, N.J. – Philips Lighting Company, the U.S.-based lighting company affiliated with Royal Philips Electronics (NYSE: PHG, AEX: PHI), today announced the three winners of the 2004 Innovation Awards Competition at the International Retail Design Conference in Miami, Fla. in the categories of "Energy Solutions," "Experience of Light" and "Environmental Solutions":

  • "Energy Solutions"—The lighting concepts at Daniel’s—the upscale clothier in Grand Rapids, Mich.—were designed by Lighting Management and demonstrate how energy-efficient lighting can be effective and deliver immediate cost savings.
  • "Experience of Light"—The new Polo Ralph Lauren store in Nantucket, Mass., designed by Johnson Schwinghammer, exemplifies how lighting can enhance and stimulate the shopping experience while supporting the retailer’s brand image.
  • "Environmental Solutions"—Henry’s Marketplace—the organic food market in Costa Mesa, Calif.—was designed by Clive Samuels and demonstrates how sustainable lighting can be both effective while being environmentally responsible.

The purpose of the Philips Lighting Company Innovation Awards is to acknowledge excellence in retail store lighting and to bring attention to the importance lighting has in creating a shopping experience.

"Philips Lighting Company’s goal is to demonstrate how lighting can affect retail businesses in positive ways," said Megan Carroll, Strategic Marketing Specialist, Philips Lighting Company. "We’re thrilled to recognize these three talented lighting designers who, on behalf of their clients, proved that lighting presents endless possibilities and is particularly vital to the success and appeal of a retail environment."

In addition to the three foremost awards, special recognition was awarded to Compact Lighting for 20/20 Vision on the High Street in the category of "Energy Solutions," and Focus Lighting for Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse for "Experience of Light."

The Retail Design Conference is taking place on September 15-17, 2004 and is sponsored by Visual Merchandising and Store Design Magazine (VM+SD.)

The Philips Innovations Award program began in 1999 and continues to inspire a significant number of lighting designers to apply for recognition in these three distinct categories. For more information, visit www.philips.com.
